Cessna Citation's XLS is an upgrade on the Excel jet. The XLS incorporates a modern glass cockpit based on the Honeywell Primus 1000 EFIS suite; the cabin is typically configured for eight, plus crew; and the PW545B powerplants give the jet increased range over the Excel at 1,858nm.

The Cessna Citation XLS costs between $6.20m for a 2004 model and $7.20m for a 2009 model, according to Aircraft Bluebook’s Autumn 2022 data. These values represent an average for a model year. The accrual sale price of a specific Citation XLS model will depend of a number of variables that could make it more valuable or less valuable than average for its model-year. These include the maintenance condition of the aircraft, the number of hours on the airframe and engines (i.e. its proximity to the next major maintenance event), and whether or not it is enrolled on an aircraft maintenance program.
There are a wide range of other options in the Mid-Size Jet market, some of which also come under the broader Textron umbrella. This includes the Hawker 800XP, which typically holds eight passengers – but can accommodate up to 13. (However, the Hawker model offers a much larger range of 2,620nm). Outside of Textron’s products, the Bombardier Learjet 40XR and 45XR compete in the same market space, with similar cabin volume and range capabilities (carrying four passengers and full fuel).
The original Citation Excel and its Citation XLS successors carved out a leading position at the lighter end of the Mid-Size business jet market for good reason. The Citation XLS provides a highly successful combination of cabin comfort, size and engine power, which has helped it to retain popularity across a range of sectors. The option of new Garmin G5000 avionics for retrofit also suggests a positive future for the business jet on the pre-owned market.
The Citation XLS+ boasts a fully integrated Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics suite, as well as FADEC Pratt & Whitney PW545C engines – both of which represent upgrades on the Citation XLS model.
Cessna Citation XLS Jet Overview
By Gerrard Cowan - Editor, Aircraft Reviews
The development of the Cessna Citation XLS marked a significant milestone for the Cessna Citation brand in the Mid-Size Jetmarket: It represented the first significant upgrade for the already-successful Citation Excel jet.
The Citation XLS was an immediate hit on the market, and 330 units were produced (according to JETNET). What makes this figure remarkable is the fact that production only lasted between 2004 and 2009. The XLS was replaced with another upgrade, the Citation XLS+ jet in 2008, with final deliveries being made to customers the following year.
As one might expect from such impressive production numbers, Cessna received orders for the Citation XLS from a variety of customers in different domains, including European Flight Service – a Swedish jet charter company, and the Turkish government.
The Citation XLS proved to be a market leader for Cessna Aircraft; in 2006, for instance, Cessna delivered 73 Citation XLS aircraft, which was more than for any other jet in the Citation line.
What features does the Cessna Citation XLS offer?
The Citation XLS aircraft can hold up to 12 passengers, though the typical configuration accommodates nine. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW545B engines, the Citation XLS has a range of more than 1,800nm, can climb direct to 45,000ft in 29 minutes, and can land on runways as short as 3,560ft, according to Textron.
The aircraft was equipped with a Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics suite in the cockpit, while Textron announced in 2019 that existing models – as well as the original Excel – could be upgraded with a Garmin G5000 integrated flight deck.

What came before and after the Cessna Citation XLS?
The Citation XLS represented the first upgrade of the already-successful Citation Excel brand. It included an avionics enhancement, and utilized more powerful engines.
The Citation XLS was followed by the Citation XLS+, which, once again, brought improvements the avionics and the powerplants, further strengthening the position of a successful Mid-Size business jet line from Cessna.
