A true entry level jet, the Cessna Citation Mustang comes with a standard cabin configuration for four passengers and a lavatory, while two additional seats are located in the cockpit. Approved for single-pilot ops, the aircraft boasts an all-glass Garmin avionics panel, PW615F powerplants and a 1,150nm range. The Cessna Citation Mustang Very Light Jet still garners plenty of interest from customers on the pre-owned market today, despite production ending in 2017.

A Citation Mustang costs between $1.85m 2006 model and $3.25m 2017 model, according to Aircraft Bluebook’s Autumn 2022 data. These values represent averages for a model year. The sale price of individual models will vary, even between those produced in the same year, depending on several factors – including the maintenance condition of a specific aircraft.
As mentioned, the Cessna Citation M2 – though slightly larger – effectively competed with new production Citation Mustangs until production stopped in 2017. Both are strong options for operators on the pre-owned market. Outside of Textron’s business jet portfolio, another option in this Very Light Jet domain is the Embraer Phenom 100, which has a range of just under 1,180nm and can carry up to seven passengers (though it is usually configured for four).
The Citation Mustang was a significant success for Textron, providing an excellent option for pilots entering the world of jet ownership (whether stepping up from Turboprop or Piston aircraft ownership, or as first time business aircraft buyers). The model was also a pioneer in the emerging entry-level business jet arena.
The Citation M2, which represents Cessna’s current focus in the entry-level jet market, offers a range of upgrades and improvements over the Citation Mustang. As mentioned, however, the M2 was originally introduced as a replacement for the Citation CJ1+ in 2011 (Citation Mustang production continued for a further six years after this). The Citation M2 has a slightly longer range (1,300nm), and a cabin lay-out configured for six, compared to four in the Citation Mustang. The M2 also follows the CitationJet product line in utilizing Williams FJ44-1AP engines. The two jets do have similar avionics, however.
Cessna Citation Mustang Jet Overview

Entering the market in 2006, in just over a decade of production the Citation Mustang amassed a significant body of operators, and, according to JETNET data in August 2022, 479 units were produced. Among its customers is Russian air taxi operator Dexter Aviation. The Mustang also made inroads into the training world, including through a deal with Turkish Airlines Flight Training Academy.
Being a Very Light Jet, and certified for single-pilot operations, the Citation Mustang is especially appealing to owner-pilot entrepreneurs, or those seeking safe and efficient ways to transport their families.
With space for four passengers in the cabin, the single pilot Citation Mustang offers a further two seats in the cockpit (including one for the pilot).
What features does the Cessna Citation Mustang offer?
Offering comparatively low operating and acquisition cost, the Cessna Citation Mustang has a range of 1,150nm. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW615F engines. The all-glass Garmin G1000 integrated avionics suite is utilized in the cockpit.
What came before and after the Cessna Citation Mustang?
The Citation Mustang was the smallest aircraft in Textron’s successful product line, and is replaced by the Cessna Citation M2 as the company’s entry-level jet option after Mustang production came to an end in 2017. (The larger Citation M2 had originally been introduced as a direct replacement for the larger Citation CJ1+ model.)
In July 2010, Cessna announced an upgraded version of the Citation Mustang – the High Sierra Edition. This came with luxury editions of the aircraft’s interiors, a special paint scheme, and a Garmin G1000 avionics suite with Synthetic Vision Technology, as well as a range of other special features.
