Gulfstream Aerospace introduced a new flagship to its fleet on the eve of NBAA-BACE 2019, saying the Gulfstream G700 will blend ultra-long-range, speed and performance with flight-deck innovation and cutting-edge cabin creation.
All-new, high-thrust Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines will power the G700 and, along with newly-designed Gulfstream winglets, help ensure the aircraft will achieve its high performance capabilities with its larger cabin. The G700 will offer 7,500nm range at Mach 0.85 or 6,400nm at Mach 0.90. The G700 is priced in the $75m range. Once certified, the jet should be able to operate on short, weight-restricted, and high-altitude airport runways.
“The Gulfstream G700 takes the very best elements from our most innovative products and unites them with cutting-edge advances to create an all-new, advanced-technology aircraft that redefines safety, comfort and range at speed,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream, as a video of the aircraft taxiing under its own power at Gulfstream headquarters in Savannah was played.
A full-scale mockup of the G700 was also on show in Las Vegas for the convention.
According to Business Aviation analyst Rollie Vincent, the G700 should build on the impressive track record of its bloodline, with the dual advantages of lower investment costs and quicker ROI/speed to market for the OEM, their investors, and other key stakeholders.
"This is a bold statement by Gulfstream to seize back the high ground at the top of the business jet pyramid," Vincent told AvBuyer.
"The G700 is a nice blend of what is best about both the G650 and the G600, combining the former’s formidable cross section and wing with the latter’s next generation avionics and fly-by-wire systems.
"We fully expect that Gulfstream will be announcing non-stop range and other performance improvements as the flight test program moves forward, in line with their track record of 'under-promising and over-delivering'.
"Less celebrated in all of the hoopla around such an exciting new product announcement is the return to prominence of Rolls-Royce - their “recovery” in winning large-cabin business Jet programs after the G500/G600 wake-up call cannot be overstated. The Pearl looks more like a jewel than something that comes out of a lowly oyster," Vincent added.
Cabin Design: Global Travel in Mind
According to Gulfstream, the aircraft boasts the tallest (6.3ft), widest (8.2ft) and longest cabin in the industry (almost 57ft) and promises to be two foot longer than that of its Bombardier Global 7500 competitor.
The all-new cabin offers up to five living areas. It includes an extra-large ‘ultragalley’ with a passenger lounge or crew compartment; a six-place dining or conference room; and a master suite with shower.
The aircraft also offers a range of cabin amenities, including a highly advanced circadian lighting system.
The Gulfstream-developed technology recreates sunrise and sunset through thousands of white and amber LEDs, helping ease the cabin occupants into new time zones and greatly reducing the physical impact of traveling halfway around the world non-stop.
“Gulfstream has a long tradition of listening to our customers, and the G700 cabin is the evolution of that collaboration,” Burns said.
Cockpit Design: Touchscreen Technology
For the pilots, the G700 features the Symmetry Flight Deck and other new safety advancements.
Along with active-control sidesticks and the industry’s most extensive use of touch-screen technology, the flight deck also comes standard with Predictive Landing Performance System, providing pilots with advanced warning of potential runway excursions so they can adjust approaches or go around.
The G700 Symmetry Flight Deck also comes standard with Gulfstream’s Enhanced Flight Vision System and Synthetic Vision on dual head-up displays.
Testing and Customers Already Established
Gulfstream has already accomplished nearly 14,000hrs of lab testing, and has successfully completed ground vibration testing, engine runs, loads calibration and all structural testing required for first flight.
The G700 flight-test fleet will incorporate five traditional test aircraft and one fully outfitted production test aircraft. Manufacturing for all test aircraft is well underway. Gulfstream anticipates G700 customer deliveries in 2022.
Qatar Airways’ charter service, Qatar Executive is the launch customer for the G700 with an agreement for 10 G700s, while Flexjet has been announced as the first North American fleet customer. These early orders are valued at almost $2bn.
“Qatar Executive demonstrated their confidence in Gulfstream when they committed as international launch customer for the G500, which is in service with them now alongside the G650ER,” Burns said, adding, “Flexjet’s customers have become accustomed to the unparalleled Gulfstream cabin experience. The G700 perfectly complements their existing Gulfstream fleet and combines the best of what we do…”
