There wasn't a lot of creativity happening in rotary aviation in the 1990's until MD brought out the NOTAR system and started installing it on anything they built. With its success proven the design team went to the planning room and came out with an organic twin designed with the NOTAR system at that heart of the build.
The inclusion of the NOTAR system at the onset of the process translates into an anti-torque system that feels exactly like a traditional system without all the power-sapping drag. It's unbelievably efficient and copes with the wind from any angle. The safety factor of the entire design has made the ship a darling of EMS and Police operations and now we are seeing the 900's more and more in utility work.
The MD900 with a full bucket will outpace a 407 uphill all day and the control power in the multi-rotor system makes it a stable and quiet place to work for the day. The early models with these 206A engines have an independent beep trim which allows the pilot to increase the RRPM for lifting and until you fly one you will never realize how underappreciated this helicopter is and why I think it is the best idea MD ever built.
